The School of Humanities at the University of Western Australia, in collaboration with the Institute of Advanced Studies and the Faculty of Arts at Murdoch University, will hold the 22nd Biennial Conference of the Australasian Association for European History in early July 2011.

This major international conference Inaugurated by David Ritter of Greenpeace, UK will focus on 'War and peace, barbarism and civilisation in modern Europe and its empires’. The event will be held across four days between 11 and 14 of July 2011, at both the University of Western Australia and Murdoch University.

Scholars and postgraduate students from all over Australia and New Zealand will attend to discuss, argue, and share research findings and pose the infinite questions studying the history of Europe demands.

Proposals for papers and panels dealing with modern European pasts, including submissions that stretch the boundaries of the theme of the conference, are now being sought by the Australasian Association for European History. Postgraduates are welcome to submit proposals.

A sundowner is to be held on Monday July 11 2011 as a formal joint-launch by Frances Flanagan of two new locally authored scholarly books, Mark Edele’s Stalinist society 1928-1953 (Oxford University Press) and Richard Bosworth’s Whispering city: Rome and its histories (Yale University Press). The conference will also mark Richard Bosworth’s retirement from what used to be called the History Department of the University of Western Australia. A conference dinner is to take place on Tuesday 12 July 2011; along with a farewell event on the evening of Thursday 14 July 2011.

Organisers would like to welcome all academics from both Australian and international universities. It is anticipated that it will be the largest gathering of scholars of modern European history and studies ever to take place in Perth.

The preliminary conference programme will be drafted and distributed on the 15 March 2011 and the deadline for early bird conference registration is the 1 June 2011 (standard thereafter)

Further information about the 36 visiting scholars, calls for papers, accommodation, the conference dinner (Tuesday 12 July) and farewell event (evening of 14 July) can be found on the Australasian Association for European History website .
