Associate Professor Xiaolin Wang recently attended the Australia China Young Scientist Exchange Program (YSEP) Showcasing Event at the Australia Pavilion, Shanghai World Expo where he met with other past representatives and this year’s Australia Young Scientists from program.

While at the expo, Xiaolin participated on a panel discussion about the past achievements and the future development of the YSEP program.

YSEP aims to strengthen personal networks, enhance institutional collaborations and possibilities for shared research infrastructure and linkages in both countries.

The program is aimed at mid-career researchers who have shown both technical expertise and leadership potential, so that the visits to the exchange university may lead to a continued collaboration at an institutional level.

Since 2007, 6 exchanges (3 hosted by Australia and 3 hosted by China) have occurred. Xiaolin was awarded one of eight places in 2009 in what was a very competitive round.

Xiaolin considers that the YSEP is a fantastic program that enhances his research links with Chinese professional colleagues and provides a platform to develop new relationships with top Chinese universities and institutes.

It also gives him a terrific opportunity to arouse international awareness of UWA and promote UWA to the top China Universities and institutes. For example, through this program, Xiaolin promoted UWA to the Tsinghua University, the top university in China. With the effort inputted by W/Prof Dongke Zhang, Director of the Centre for Energy at UWA, plans are now in place to develop an international student exchange program between Tsinghua University and UWA.
