The challenges for Australia in discharging its responsibilities towards refugees will be the subject of the 2010 Manning Clark Day of Ideas, presented by UWA's Institute of Advanced Studies, on Saturday, October 16, 2010.
The Manning Clark Day of Ideas is an annual event which encourages the audience to participate and share in public debate of important issues.
The Australian Government's recent decision to lift its suspension of the processing of Afghan asylum claims, and protests both inside and outside of detention centres have once again brought questions about Australia's handling of refugees into public focus.
This year's Day of Ideas will bring together eminent speakers from the local and national arena to discuss the idea of refuge and the ways in which issues of national border security can be reconciled with humanitarian action to protect refugees.
Speakers include Richard Towle, Regional Representative to Australia for the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Winthrop Professor Carmen Lawrence, Maria Saraceni, President, Ethnic Communities Council WA, Michael O'Hara CEO, Metropolitan Migrant Resource Centre, Carina Hoang, Renay Grech, CEO ASeTTS, Liz Minchin, The Age Donna Green and Sebastian Clark, President, Manning Clark House.
