The Labor Party has retained the state seat of Armadale with its candidate Tony Buti claiming victory in the recent by-election.The University of Western Australia law lecturer picked up about 58 per cent of the primary votes.

Mr Buti was sitting on 71 percent of the two party preferred vote ahead of his nearest challenger the Christian Democratic Party's Jamie van Burgel when he claimed victory in the seat.

He says he is looking forward to representing a community he has lived in for most of his life.

"I'm very excited and very privileged I've been given this opportunity," he said.

The WA Electoral Commission says it was pleased with the voter turn-out after earlier concerns it could be low because of the AFL grand final.

The seat had previously been held for Labor for 14 years by Alannah MacTiernan who stood aside to run in this year's Federal election.
