Many students studying at The University of Western Australia Albany Centre find themselves, at some stage during their degree, paying a visit to what they affectionately refer to as ‘the northern campus'. For some this means a visit to UWA in Perth, but for others, like Tammy London, their studies take them much further north.

Tammy chose to spend the final year of her Bachelor of Arts degree studying at Uppsala University in Sweden as part of the UWA Student Exchange Study Abroad Program. The Student Exchange Program offers current UWA students the opportunity to study overseas at renowned universities for one or two semesters and gain credit towards their UWA degree.

‘It was an amazing experience. I was studying in an English-speaking stream with many other international students so I was sharing classes with people from Mexico to Finland - and yes, there were even some Swedish students!' said Ms London.

As a student majoring in Anthropology, Ms London found the experience invaluable. ‘The lecturers were fantastic. The opportunity to spend a year living in another culture was really worthwhile. It gives you a different perspective on all sorts of global and social issues.'

While the short, cold winter days took some getting used to they also provided the opportunity for trying out all sorts of typically Swedish activities from ice fishing to exploring the landscape on snowmobiles.

So, would she recommend the study abroad program to other Albany students? ‘Yes, definitely. Do it. Just bring warm clothes!'
