Breakfast by the Bay: Winthrop Professor Richard Weller

Winthrop Professor Richard Weller, Discipline Chair of Landscape Architecture at UWA, delivered a lecture on urbanism and Western Australia's future in the region. Held at the University Club on 3rd March, the lecture was well-received by a captivated audience.

Public Lecture: Lee Hunter
On 19th March, UWA Business School alumni Lee Hunter delivered a public lecture on the topic of YouTube. Hunter is currently the head of Consumer & Partner Marketing, Europe, Middle East and Africa at YouTube. He has worked in similar positions at Deutsche Bank and Google, where he helped create the Google Online Marketing Challenge.

Business School International Week
Held from 22 March-26 March, the Business School International Week was an eye-opening success. The week included "An International Career: Developing a Global Perspective" - A conversation with Ambassadorial Council WA Chapter Members; information on studying abroad; networking opportunities; Courageous Stories About Race; an international food festival; and an end-of-week soccer match.

Visiting Professor Edward Altman
On 31st March 2010, NWQ Visiting Professor in Alternative Investments, Professor Edward Altman, gave a public lecture on the current conditions and outlook in global credit markets. Professor Altman, co-developer of the Z-Metrics Credit Analysis Tool, spoke about the build up of the credit bubble, the size of the distressed debt asset market, and the outlook for credit markets and bankruptcies into the future.

BHP Billiton Visiting Expert in Social Impact Jeremy Nicholls
Jeremy Nicholls brought his expertise in social business to the UWA Business School in early April. Nicholls was originally an accountant, before deciding to focus his work on finding ways for organisations to better understand and manage the social value that they create. Nicholls co-authored ‘There is No Business like Social Business,' and is the chair of Fair Pensions, as well as director of the BETA Model.

The Hunger Project
Dr Badiul Alam Majumdar, Vice President and Country Director, The Hunger Project Bangladesh, delivered a public lecture on 16th April. Dr Majumdar outlined how The Hunger Project works in Bangladeshi rural areas to promote self reliance and the sustainable end of hunger by training local government leaders, women and youth.

Public Lecture: WA's Transport Infrastructure Future

On 20th April, John Fischer (Department of Transport WA), John Cleland (WestNet Infrastructure Group) and Dr Melinda Hodkiewicz (UWA) discussed best practice in infrastructure management. The WestNet Infrastructure Group panel considered the projected demand in transport infrastructure throughout the state over the next decade. Topics included the role of the oil and gas industry, need for rail and port infrastructure, and the role of social dimensions in transport management.

WUN Enterprise International Student Forum
Four UWA students were recently lucky enough to attend the World Universities Network STIMULATE Forum, held in April at the University of Sydney. There, the UWA students worked with teams from the UK, Canada, and China to develop policy responses to the emergence of e-publishing.
Damian Koh, Darren Mircev, Holly Ransom and Desmond Yeo represented UWA at the four-day forum. The business plans developed by the student teams for the Australian publishing industry will be presented to the Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research for policy input.

Breakfast by the Bay: John Denton
‘Australian Second Track Diplomacy' was the topic of John Denton's, Corrs Chambers Westgarth CEO, speech at Breakfast by the Bay, held on 28th April. Denton argued that the private sector should become more active in shaping Australia's diplomacy and foreign policy. Over the long term, he suggested, this would be effective in building deeper relationships with people, organisations, and business overseas. For more information see Corrs Chambers .

Public Lecture: Malcolm Richmond
On 28th April Malcolm Richmond, Professorial Fellow at UWA, presented a public lecture on the future of the mining industry. Richmond has over 30 years experience in the mining industry and is the former Deputy Chairman of the Australian Minerals Research Council. The lecture covered the demand from China's growing economy, the impact of the recession, and the future of the industry.

Conversations About Women in Leadership
On 17 May, the Business School, in partnership with Chief Executive Women, hosted Conversations About Women in Leadership. Four high-profile panellists - Katie Lahey, Chief Executive, Business Council of Australia (BCA); Kay Goldsworthy, first female Anglican bishop in Australia; James Pearson, CEO, Chamber of Commerce and Industry (WA); and Peter Van Onselen, Associate Professor in Politics and Government, ECU - discussed the merits of quotas and other methods of encouraging women into leadership positions.
