Tim Pitman (Research Development Officer) continued the series of seminars for the staff and students of The UWA Oceans Institute held on Friday 2nd July. He provided an overview of what ‘quality' is, who it is defining quality, and how to identify quality journals for publication of your research.

The focus was on how to identify and publish in high-quality academic journals and also provided information on the most common tools for measuring quality: Scopus, ERA and Thomson ISI.

QEII Fellow Jon Evans then spoke about his experiences in publishing in high-impact journals and provided hints on how to frame a quality ‘question' and increase your chances of publishing in the best journals.

The Seminar was well attended and very well received by about 30 Oceans Institute staff and students.

Jon Evans pointed out that he expects around an 80% rejection rate for all his submissions to journals. He suggested that you write to a general audience and covered topics that included; taking advantage of pre-submission enquiries, the importance of the cover letter, reading similar articles in the journal you are submitting to, getting others to read your work. He emphasized how important it was to read the information returned by the reviewers.
