Are whale aggregates tied to upwelling deepwater in Sri Lanka? How do sharks sense their prey? Did you know sloshing around of Liquid Natural Gas can damage tankers? What is a perched beach? The answers to these and other questions were shared at the Inaugural UWA Oceans Institute's Postgraduate Showcase.

UWA Oceans Institute postgraduate students were given the opportunity to promote their research projects on Friday 16 th April at the inaugural Oceans Institute postgraduate student's Showcase, This was followed by refreshments back at The UWA Oceans Institute, where the students continued to network .

Thirty-six students from five different UWA schools (across two faculties) and AIMS at UWA presented highlights of their research projects. Twenty-two different UWA academics are the supervisors of these students along with fifteen external supervisors. By sharing knowledge and learning about each other's projects the students were able to identify the collaborative opportunities that the Oceans Institute enables.

"It was a wonderful opportunity to see the true breadth of research projects within the Oceans Institute; the diversity of approaches as well as the backgrounds of the students is really exciting" said Asst/Prof Nicole Jones, who helped organise the showcase, "The students embraced the opportunity to share their research."

"I was very impressed with the energy, breadth of subject material and professionalism shown by all speakers. It makes my job so satisfying." said Director of the Oceans Institute W/Prof Gary Kendrick

The Oceans Institute will provide a series of workshops for PhD students, with the aim to provide support to students and help to develop their research skills. The first session will be about helping students build a track record in research, with  a view to eventually  publishing their work in the top journals of their field.
