Finding innovative solutions to global economic challenges including energy security has been given new impetus by a partnership between The University of Western Australia and the US-based international think tank, the Milken Institute.

The relationship has been building over the year, but the first initiative has taken place, with UWA taking part in the 2010 Milken Institute Global Conference - a forum focused on economic and social issues.

Tim Shanahan, UWA Energy and Minerals Initiative Director, said the partnership between a pre-eminent research-intensive university and an international think tank will stimulate debate on issues of international significance.

"Partnering with the Milken Institute will connect leading researchers and thinkers from across the world and ensure we cross pollinate ideas which will lead to better solutions," Mr Shanahan said.

Through the partnership, UWA and the Milken Institute may collaborate in research and high level forums on regional solutions to global economic challenges, including policy issues in fields as diverse as finance, energy, natural resources, climate change, social impact on regional communities, population health, and urban development.

The Milken Institute is at the forefront of understanding the interconnected global economy and is researching how global capital markets could work efficiently and effectively to increase the quality of life for diverse populations around the globe.
