UWA Publishing author Susan Varga has been shortlisted for the 2010 Barbara Jefferis Award.

Susan's novel Headlong tells the tale of Julia - A strong-willed woman, who has suddenly lost her husband and, along with him, her will to live.

The vital, energetic old woman that her daughter Kati thought she knew disappears almost overnight leaving Kati to cope with a mother constantly on the verge of suicide.

This finely wrought tale of love and conflict casts a searchlight into dark areas - how people deal with ageing, loss, death and grief. At what point are you allowed to say ‘Life is not worth living'?

Director at UWA Publishing Terri-ann White said she was thrilled that this prestigious and lucrative prize has featured one of UWAP's books in two of its three years of operation.

The award, valued at $35,000, honours Australian novels with high standards of literary merit that depict women and girls in a positive way or otherwise empower the status of women and girls in society.
