University of WA graduate, Robert Mazza, will become the newest Supreme Court judge in March after six years as a District Court judge and a long career as a criminal lawyer.

Justice Mazza was in private practice for the first 16 years of his career. During that time he and his late father, Jim, established the firm of Mazza and Mazza. "I was very close to my father", he said. "I only ever wanted to be a lawyer because of him".

Primarily a defence lawyer, he represented people at hearings before the National Crime Authority, the Anti-Corruption Commission and the Police Royal Commission. Announcing Justice Mazza's appointment, Attorney General Christian Porter described him as highly regarded and greately respected in the legal profession.

When he is not working, Justice Mazza likes to run and play cricket and hockey.
