A woman who wrote the classic gender-inclusive reading of the Qur'an will lead a lunchtime seminar at The University of Western Australia on the challenges faced by today's Muslim women. Professor Amina Wadud will discuss the centrality of Muslim women in debates on Islam; the relationship between Muslims and modernity; and the future of social developments in countries where Muslims live.

Professor Wadud is Emeritus Professor of Islamic Studies at Virginia Commonwealth University. She has taken part in more than 200 presentations and conferences around the world and is the author of the ground-breaking book, Qur'an and Woman; Rereading the Sacred Text from a Woman's Perspective. Her latest book, Inside the Gender Jihad: Women's Reform in Islam (2006), links theory and feminist theology to reform movements and women's activism in Islam. Professor Wadud inspired controversy with her 2005 decision to lead more than100 men and women in prayer in New York, and later again in the city of Oxford.
