On 31st October the revamped Biochemistry Building, which is now a dedicated combined Medicine, Pharmacy and Neuroscience teaching and research facility, was officially reopened by His Excellency, Dr Ken Michael AC, Governor of Western Australia.

The building now includes state-of-the-art teaching and research facilities along with associated office and support areas as well as six integrated medical skills training rooms for use by medical students. Two plaques were unveiled, one acknowledging the formal re-opening of the building and its new facilities and another recognizing the contribution of Rotary International and the Perth Rotary Club in particular in establishing the Medical School at UWA.

Guests included members of Rotary Clubs, scientific and academic staff, and colleagues from industry and government. Following formal speeches, guests were invited to cocktails and to inspect the building. Of interest was the Geoff Miller Collection of pharmacy memorabilia which is housed in purpose built cabinets in the Pharmacy reception area on the ground floor. The collection was amassed by Geoff Miller over many years and its display has been made possible by the generosity of the Pharmaceutical Defence Limited. Geoff Miller still delivers occasional lectures to students in the Master of Pharmacy program on the history of pharmacy in Australia.

As the groups now occupying the Biochemistry Building are from three different faculties (Medicine, Dentistry & Health Sciences; Life & Physical Sciences; and Natural & Agricultural Sciences) the occasion was one to celebrate the University’s collegial and cooperative relationships in the areas of teaching and research.
