Three excited students and two teachers from Beijing were in Perth for a short-term study program at UWA recently – an experience they said they’d remember forever.

The three students were chosen from some of the best high school students in China and carried out research projects under the supervision of UWA professors.

Miss Wang Bing Fen and Miss Zhao Xiaojun , both 17, worked in the areas of organic chemistry and environmental science respectively, while Mr Rao LingZhe , 16, undertook research in animal and plant biology.

The projects involved 10 laboratory sessions, complete with research reports and oral presentations. Research supervisors Assistant Professor Matthew Hipsey , Dr Sandra Saunders and Professor Jim Whelan are to be commended for their efforts with the students.

The Beijing Association for Science and Technology (BAST) has been sending students to Perth for several years. The program provides the students with an enticing snapshot of life at UWA and often leads to these students choosing to return for full-time study at later date.

One such student is Yueming Sun (‘Kelly’) from BAST 2008. Kelly has just completed her first year of the Bachelor of Science in the Advanced Science Program, the very program that UWA’s 2009 Rhodes Scholar Dustin Stuart completed.

Although a large portion of the BAST students’ time is taken up with research, they do have the chance to experience life outside the laboratory.

The students managed to visit the WA Museum, the WA Art Gallery, AQWA, the Perth Mint, the Maritime Museum, the Gin Gin Gravity Discovery Centre and Yanchep National Park.

Other social highlights included an Aussie barbecue by the river at Crawley – along with fitness workouts at the UWA Recreation Centre.

Thanks go to the offshore section of the Life and Physical Science Faculty which put a great deal of time into organising the program to ensure its success.
