Each November, the School of Biomedical, Biomolecular and Chemical Sciences holds its annual Research Forum, and the 2009 presentations were some of the best to date. The forum provides an opportunity for research students to showcase their work and develop the necessary skills to be seen and heard in the global research arena.

Honours, Masters and PhD students participate in the event with poster presentations and oral presentations. The 2009 forum featured eight presenters and more than 30 poster submissions, with prizes provided by the Graduate Research School (UWA) and other sponsors.

Belinda Kaskow (Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Honours student) took out the award for best oral presentation with her presentation Functional Characterisation of Polymorphisms in Vanin-1 (VNN1). Belinda won $250 cash for her efforts.

The 2009 poster presentation winners included:

  • Rohan Bythell-Douglas , first prize – Honours Category
  • Sharnice Koek , second prize – Honours Category
  • Elizabeth Thomas , first prize – First Year Research Category
  • Ben Edwards , second prize – First Year Research Category
  • Aleksandra Debowski , first prize – Second Year Research Category
  • Jian-Li Zou , second prize – Second Year Research Category
  • Kamel Hammani , first prize – Third Year Research Category
  • Cornelia Viebahn , second prize – Third Year Research Category

Forum host, Professor Mark Spackman (Associate Head of School, Research), said he was overwhelmed with the level of participation by students and the attendance of fellow students, staff and friends.
