UWA Music graduate Lorenzo di Paola has moved from the blue skies of Perth to the Black Forest in Germany to do a Masters in Music at the prestigious Freiburg Musikhochschule in Germany after winning the Friends of UWA Music Travelling Scholarship.

Mr di Paola, 34, plays the harpsichord and basso continuo, the 17 th and 18 th century style of harpsichord accompaniment.  He has a Bachelor of Music (Pianoforte) from UWA and plans to complete a Bachelor of Arts (European Studies) when he returns to UWA after completing his Masters degree.

The former Trinity College student and Wembley resident played with Perth Baroque Ensemble as well as several UWA and student productions and chamber music concerts.  He has received several awards, including the Waveney Wansbrough Prize for Piano Performance and UWA Graduates Association Prize for Best student in the Bachelor of Music.

The travel scholarship was established by Friends of UWA Music to enable eligible students or graduates of The University of Western Australia to undertake further study in musical performance outside Western Australia.  The scholarship is provided from an annual donation of $10,000.

Mr di Paola's ability and enthusiasm for music were evident from a young age when he received several awards, including the Trinity College and St Mary's Cathedral Choir Scholarship.

"It was not until I was part-way through my science studies in 2000 that I realised how important it was to follow my passion," he said.
