Accompanying the launch of an important new book on a cancer that affects one in nine Australian women before the age of 75 are a series of pencil and wash drawings by Jon Tarry that symbolise the relationship between mother and child.

Breast Cancer: the Facts by Professor Christobel Saunders and her colleague Dr Sunil Jassal, from the School of Surgery at The University of Western Australia (UWA), covers all aspects of breast cancer with a focus on the patient journey.

Artist Jon Tarry's works, which are supporting the launch, include Mammalia in Angel City 1 and Mammalia in Angel City 2. He said the breast defined our species and inspired words including mammal, mammary, and mama.

Tarry's work has been exhibited internationally in London, New York, Los Angeles and Venice, and he has a permanent work displayed at the Australian High Commission in Berlin.

Locally, Goddard de Fiddes Contemporary Art represents Tarry's art, and his public sculptures include Fremantle's Fishermen's Memorial, Albany Entertainment Centre and Marginale in Venice, Italy.

Tarry says, "The subject of my work is layered in an expression of loss, separation and rebirth.

"The mother holds her son with one hand while offering him to eternity with the other. This is a passionate yet gentle open gesture emblematic of a belief that sacrifice is not the ending but a true beginning."

Tarry's other piece on display is simply titled Child .

The exhibition also features works by photographer Jacquie Moran, drawings by UWA artist, Hans Arkeveld, and optical images by UWA Engineer, Robert McLaughlin.

Through the use of this universal medium of imagery, the art exhibition deepens our understanding of the breast cancer journey through visual interpretation.

The art exhibition is on display in the Cullity Gallery from 19 January until 1 February 2010.
