UWA Business School
Public Lectures and Events
Interest in the ongoing debate on the impact of the global financial crisis on society or the role of the free market; the creation of an ethics driven business culture and the development of strategies for ending world hunger extends far beyond the academic community.

In accordance with our mission, extending the reach of our learning and teaching into wider society is a key activity for the Business School.

The Business School held a series of public lectures and events during 2009, including:

  • a presentation on the causes and effects of the global financial crisis during the UWA Open Day by Professors Kenneth Clements and Ray da Silva Rosa.
  • lectures by the Alcoa Visiting Professors including a lecture on business ethics by Dr Mary Gentile and a lecture on global marketing by Professor Jean-Claude Usunier.
  • a public lecture entitled ‘Micro finance's role in ending world hunger' by Speciosa Wandira, a former Vice President of Uganda.
  • a debate on the role of the free market model and current global financial crisis on society with a panel including Professor Alan Robson, Vice-Chancellor UWA, Professor Tracey Horton, Dean of The Business School, Professor Carmen Lawrence, former Premier of Western Australia and Professorial Fellow of UWA's Institute of Advanced Studies, and Professor Rob Lambert and Professor Webster, award winning authors of the book Grounding Globalization: Labour in the Age of Insecurity. This debate was held in partnership with The Australian Global Studies Research Centre.
  • The Shann Memorial Lecture by Saul Eslake, Director of the Productivity Growth research program at the Grattan Institute on aspects of the global financial crisis, the main policy responses from an international and Australian perspective and the challenges that Australia will face in its aftermath.
  • The Bateman Memorial Lecture by Professor Sir David Hendry, Professor of Economics and Fellow of Nuffield College, at Oxford and entitled Empirical Model Discovery. Professor Hendry was Professor of Econometrics at the London School of Economics before taking up his current position at Oxford in 1982. He is a prolific researcher making significant contributions in the areas of computing in econometrics, econometric methodology, model selection, econometric theory and forecasting. This year Professor Hendry was knighted for his services to the social sciences.

Breakfast by the Bay 2009

The Breakfast by the Bay series of professional events is a core component of the Business School's community engagement program and has continued to grow in popularity in 2009.  Held in conjunction with the University Club of Western Australia, these events are designed to provide a forum for prominent UWA graduates and leaders in the business community to share insights into the hot topics in corporate Australia.

There are five breakfast events held each year on a bi- monthly basis.  The events regularly achieve capacity attendance in excess of 200 guests and have developed an excellent reputation within the university and corporate sectors for the high quality of speakers, topics and networking opportunities.

Breakfast by the Bay speakers and topics have this year included:

  • Robber Baron to Statesman - The Journey of Socially Responsible Corporations, by Visiting Professor Dr Kunal Basu.
  • Learning from Business Legends, by celebrated Australian Rugby player, business leader and author John Eales.
  • A panel discussion on the Australian Governments proposed Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme - and its overall impact on our future lives.  Panellists included Dr Carmen Lawrence, Professorial Fellow at The University of Western Australia, Tim McAuliffe, Alcoa General Manager of Corporate Affairs and Carbon Strategy and Trevor Power, Director of the Household and Industry Assistance, Emissions Trading Division, Federal Department of Climate Change.
  • A panel discussion on the global economic crisis, Australia's response,  and the repercussions going forward, featuring Richard Gibbs, Chief Economist and head of economics for Macquarie Group Limited, Professor Raymond Da Silva Rosa, Discipline Head of Accounting at the UWA Business School and Professor Phil Hancock, Professor in Accounting and Finance at the UWA Business School and Associate Dean (Teaching and Learning).
  • Working Here, There and Everywhere:  Effective Coordination with Technology Across Time, Space and Cultures, by Professor Cristina Gibson, visiting Winthrop Professor and Deans Professor of Organisation and Management at the University of California, Irvine.
