World-leading ophthalmic surgeon Professor Ian Constable's outstanding contribution to ophthalmology and to science has been recognised in Western Australia's premier science awards.

Professor Constable, Professor of Ophthalmology at The University of Western Australia and the founder of and driving force behind the Lions Eye Institute, was inducted into the Science Hall of Fame at the 2009 Western Australian Science Awards.

The LEI has delivered ground-breaking discoveries and developments in eye research, including the LEI artificial cornea, which is granting sight to people all around the world.

Announcing the induction, Science and Innovation Minister Troy Buswell said Professor Constable had been instrumental in his role as chair of the State's science advisory councils in recommending funding priorities and establishing the WA Energy Research Alliance, the Western Australian Marine Science Institution and the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research.

UWA Vice-Chancellor Professor Alan Robson said Professor Constable was recognised internationally for his work and the University had named an annual lecture in his honour.

"Ian Constable is the epitome of international excellence.  He exemplifies the important role of scientific research in finding solutions to the problems faced by society," Professor Robson said.
