President of the International Crisis Group and former Australian Attorney-General and Foreign Minister, Gareth Evans, US ambassador-designate Kim Beazley and West Australian Premier Colin Barnett were among leading political, business, academic and media figures who met at The University of Western Australia from November 8 to 10 to debate the geopolitical, economic and social issues confronting our region.

The inaugural In the Zone conference, hosted by UWA, brought together people from Western Australia's nearest neighbours, including the countries that make up 60 per cent of the world's population and which are expected to undergo the most rapid economic development in the coming decades.

More than 50 international participants discussed global poverty, economic growth, health and disaster management and cities of the future in a series of informative, challenging and enlightening sessions.  Speakers included UWA Nobel Laureate Professor Barry Marshall, Chinese Ambassador to Australia Zhang Junsai and Akio Mimura, Chairman of Nippon Steel.

To find summaries of the sessions, podcasts of interviews with key speakers and other information from the conference, see the In the Zone website.
