The public is hungry for knowledge of the true dimensions of Australia's climate crisis and what can be done about it without wrecking our economy - a subject to be examined at The University of Western Australia next week.
Winthrop Professor Carmen Lawrence will speak to author Tony Kevin about the insights of British economist and human liberalist John Maynard Keynes and their relevance to the current economic and environmental crises.
Tony Kevin will visit UWA for this special literary event to discuss his new book Crunch Time: Using and Abusing Keynes to Fight the Twin Crises of our Era (Scribe 2009).
Crunch Time argues that the Australian Government's approach to the two major crises of our time is no longer defensible or practical and calls for a "new, green Keynesianism now, to look clearly and bravely at our present world, and to draw correct policy conclusions about it".
Formerly Australia's ambassador to Poland and Cambodia, Tony Kevin is currently an honorary visiting fellow at the Australian National University's Research School of Pacific and Asian Studies in Canberra. In his new book, he links economic analysis and climate change science, using the inspiration of Keynes as the bridge.
With degrees in civil engineering, economics and political science, Tony Kevin has written extensively on Australian foreign, national security, and refugee policies in Australia's national print media, and is the author of the award-winning books A Certain Maritime Incident: the Sinking of SIEV X , and Walking the Camino: a Modern Pilgrimage to Santiago .
