A Winthrop Professor of Respiratory Medicine at The University of Western Australia has won a prestigious first prize in the British Medical Association book awards' respiratory medicine category.

Professor Y.C. Gary Lee of the Centre for Asthma, Allergy and Respiratory Research co-edited Textbook of Pleural Diseases (Second Edition) with Richard W. Light, Professor of Medicine at Vanderbilt University, Nashville, USA.

The judges described their work as "an excellent textbook edited by two of the leading lights in the field" and "the must-have textbook for all those dealing with pleural diseases."  They recommended that "medical libraries might consider buying several copies to meet the demand."

And one international reviewer wrote of the textbook as "a gem and every pulmonary specialist and all students of medicine will find this book useful in clinical practice."

The textbook's authors were from more than 10 countries and wrote in an accessible style complete with full-colour histological images and highlighted key patient management issues.
