The Perth International Arts Festival is thrilled to announce our film programmer Sherry Hopkins as the winner of a major industry award last night.

Sherry took out the "Independent Spirit Award" given by the Australian Independent Distributors Association as part of the Australian International Movie Convention on the Gold Coast.

Perth Festival Artistic Director Shelagh Magadza warmly congratulated Sherry on behalf of the entire Festival.

"We all warmly congratulate Sherry and thank her for her tremendous contribution to the Festival. Her enthusiasm for film and unerring eye have helped shape the Lotterywest Festival Films into a WA cultural icon, beloved by Perth audiences."

AIDA vice-president Natalie Miller said the industry-voted award was given in recognition of Sherry's long term support of independent films.

"This award is to a person who is sympathetic, supportive and sensitive to the independent film industry," she said.

"We also recognise Sherry's enthusiasm and marketing skills which have helped in making so many films successful."

Sherry began working for the then Festival of Perth in 1971 and moved to film programming in 1976. She is now the Perth International Arts Festival Senior Manager of Film and Electronic Image.

Over 100,000 people attend the Lotterywest Festival Films each year.
