A NASA astronaut, a world-leading astronomer, and WA Chief Scientist Lyn Beazley AO hosting a "science café for girls", are some of the headline events at The University of Western Australia as it celebrates National Science Week from August 15-23.

The University will offer a range of science events for schools to excite a new generation's interest in science, as well as public lectures for a broader audience.

Astronaut Megan McArthur's first mission into space, in May this year, was to help to repair the 19-year-old Hubble telescope.  On the fifth and final servicing mission for the Hubble, she clocked 12 days and 21 hours, travelling 5,276,000 miles in 197 Earth orbits.  Next week, she will talk to students and host a public lecture at UWA, co-hosted by Scitech and the WA Government.

Australian National University Professor Charley Lineweaver will pose the question Are we alone in the Universe? to school students and the general public in two lectures at UWA next week.  A world-leading astronomer, Professor Lineweaver is the coordinator of ANU's Planetary Science Institute and will deliver the 2009 Australian Institute of Physics De Laeter Youth lecture.
