All staff are invited to the IEEE Signal Processing Society Chapter Seminar ‘ Voice-Activated data entry for the Geneoz Vivarium Management Solution ' by Dr Frank Koentgen , Co-founder, Director and CEO of Ozgene Pty Ltd .

Abstract:

The geneoz Vivarium Management System (geneoz VMS) was developed by Ozgene, one of the world's premier suppliers of Genetically Modified (GM) mouse models, to manage the processes involved in creating and breeding GM mice.

One of the primary drivers for the development process was to minimise the impact of data collection on individual workloads. With the establishment of its own Vivarium in 2006 Ozgene was able to redefine the way animal technicians worked with geneoz VMS: the system directs the animal technicians through the tasks that need to be performed.

Since 2000 geneoz VMS has shifted focus from collecting data to driving the processes performed in creating data.

Geneoz VMS employs Automatic Information and Data Capture (AIDC) to acquire data without manual entry using barcode scanning. The scanning process performs continuous auditing of all data. Geneoz VMS provides accurate animal numbers and statistics, allowing efficient colony management (3R) and rapid response to animal and investigator needs.

In this presentation some of the issues arising from adopting a hands-free voice-activated data entry system will be discussed. Although only a simple isolated word recognition task is needed, reliability is paramount for operators to be comfortable with the system.

Nevertheless current studies of existing commercial speech recognisers demonstrates there is still a need for simple (in terms of vocabulary complexity), but robust word recognisers for hands-free data entry.

About the Speaker:

Dr Frank Koentgen is the co-founder, Director and CEO of Ozgene Pty Ltd with over 20 years of international experience in the management and production of GM mice and rats.
He received his Ph.D.from the Max-Planck Institute for Immunobiology , Germany and Roche Pharmaceuticals , Switzerland.

After his postdoctoral studies at the Roche Institute for Molecular Biology , USA, he established and headed the Genetically Modified Mouse Laboratory at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute (WEHI), Australia.
Dr Koentgen is a co-inventor of the lentiviral transgenic technology and has published in Cell, EMBO, Nature, Immunity, PNAS, Science and many more.
