On 16-17 November 2009, the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering (ATSE) is holding its Annual Symposium ‘ Future-Proofing Australia - Rising to the Challenge of Climate Change' . ATSE is awarding Early Career Symposium (ECS) Fellowships to researchers (including students and those within 3 years of their PhD award) who are developing a career in the scientific and technological industries. ATSE ECS Fellows will be invited to attend the Symposium and contribute to the conclusions.

The ATSE Symposium will be held at the Sofitel Brisbane Grand Central located at 249 Turbot Street, Brisbane.

The Symposium speakers will include successful Australian CEOs, distinguished overseas experts, influential Government advisors and eminent practitioners.

The Symposium will address climate changes issues:
'Australia is facing the possibility of climate changes that threaten our economic and ecological sustainability and our lifestyle. We must reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Global opportunities and benefits will follow if we first develop the capabilities, policies and industries to future-proof our nation. Meeting the targets that are being debated for emissions reduction over the period to 2050 will raise daunting challenges'.

The Symposium will focus on the practical potential of current and future low emission technologies and other greenhouse gas abatement strategies.

Four large emissions sectors will be addressed; electricity generation, transport, the minerals industry and land management. Options will be evaluated in terms of cost, time to implementation, scale-up potential, risks, research and development needs, policy support requirements, public acceptability and commercial opportunity.

The Early Career Symposium Fellows will be selected on the basis of merit and potential to contribute to Australia's future. Applications are being sought through Australia's universities, technical colleges, businesses and research organisations.

Application forms and further details of the Symposium may be obtained on the website or via email [email protected] .
