Six graduates and alumni of The University of Western Australia have been honoured by their inclusion on the 2009 Queen's Birthday Honours List.  They are:

Adjunct Professor Bruce Hobbs AO of UWA's School of Earth and Environment, was named an Officer of the Order of Australia "for service to science, particularly in the field of structural geology, as a leader in the development of innovative research centres for mineral exploration technologies".  Adjunct Professor Hobbs was formerly the WA Chief Scientist and Executive Director of the State Government's Office of Science and Innovation.

Dr Jack Bendat AM CitWA, awarded an Honorary Doctorate by UWA in 2006, was named a Member of the Order of Australia "for service to the community through philanthropic contributions to a range of charitable and cultural organisations".

Ms Michele Kosky AM, who graduated from UWA with a MPhil in 1987, was named a Member of the Order of Australia "for service to the community through reform and advocacy roles for people with HIV/AIDS and to the Health Consumers Council of Western Australia".

Dr Patrick Bird OAM, who graduated from UWA with a BSc in Agriculture and later a PhD in 1973, was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia "for service to the environment through farm forestry and revegetation programs".

Dr Giuseppe Panizza OAM, who graduated from UWA in 1963 with a MB and BS, was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia "for service to the Italian community of Perth".

Ms Meghan Quinn, who graduated from UWA with a BEc in 1992, was awarded a Public Service Medal "for outstanding public service in the development of climate change policy".

UWA Vice-Chancellor, Professor Alan Robson, said the wide range of the Honours recipients' dedication to society, through science, the arts, charity and the environment, reflected the University's commitment to Western Australia.

"For almost a century, this University has devoted itself to producing graduates and alumni for whom service to the local community, the State and the nation, has been an integral part of their professionalism," Professor Robson said.
