On Thursday, 21st May the Faculty held our annual prize-giving event, only this year it took the format of a breakfast with almost 200 students, staff and prize donors being treated to a sumptuous meal at the University Club.

As we have found in the past that students and industry have struggled to make contact during the cocktail reception following the ceremony, we felt that by seating them together at tables it would encourage the opportunity to network in a semi-professional environment, which we are pleased to report it did!

Guests enjoyed a hearty breakfast while listening to inspiring speeches given by the Dean, Winthrop Professor David Smith; Vaughn Grey, a recent Engineering graduate who was awarded the 2008 National Young Engineer of the year in recognition of his work with Engineers without Borders; and John McAnearney, the 2008 Faculty Medal winner and Rhodes Scholar.

Students and industry were delighted with the new format, which enabled greater communication between prize winners and donors. Many students left the breakfast with improved networking skills and newfound confidence along with contacts to help them in their professional lives and invitations to visit workplaces, perhaps to discuss future employment options!

The breakfast was hailed a great success and we would like to offer final congratulations to all of our 2008 prizewinners and a big thank you to the teaching and learning staff, who have directed and inspired the winners' academic achievements.  Well done!
