Sydney-based artist Ross Gibson will visit The University of Western Australia this week to give a free public lecture about his recently released novel The Summer Exercises.

Fresh from the Sydney Writer's Festival, Gibson will discuss the philosophies and design procedures behind his novel, which brings to life moving images from post- World War II Sydney.

For fifteen years, Gibson has been working with a remarkable archive of crime-scene photographs that are in the care of the Historic Houses Trust of NSW in Sydney.

The Summer Exercises is his most recent artwork to come from his study of the collection, and is a collaborative project with UWA Press and the Historic Houses Trust of NSW.

Gibson is professor of Contemporary Arts at Sydney College of the Arts. He makes books, films and audiovisual installations, working in cultural institutions including the Museum of Sydney and the Australian Centre for the Moving Image.

His previous books include The Diminishing Paradise , South of the West , The Bond Store Tales , Exchanges and Seven Versions of an Australian Badland .

The Summer Exercises will be available for sale and signing at the end of the lecture.
