Mandatory sentencing's potential to reduce crime rates in WA will be discussed at The University of Western Australia at a forum hosted by the Progressive Law Students' Association (PLSA).

It follows the recent assault against Constable Matt Butcher which reignited the public debate about whether more crimes should attract mandatory sentencing.

The four panellists, having extensive knowledge about mandatory sentencing, are:

  • Dr David Indermaur of UWA's Crime Research Centre
  • Shadow Attorney-General, John Quigley
  • MLC-elect for the Greens WA, Alison Xamon , and
  • Criminal Barrister Laurie Levy .

After a question-and-answer session, panelists and attendees will meet over light refreshments.

WHAT: Forum - "Mandatory Sentencing in WA:  Does More Time Mean Less Crime?"

WHEN: Tuesday, 19 May, 5.45pm for 6pm start.

WHERE: UWA Economics Conference Room, top floor Economics Building.  The nearest car park is P3 off Hackett Drive Entrance 1.

This forum is free and open to the public.
