In April 2009, the School of Music welcomed a new addition to the Eileen Joyce Collection of significant and historic keyboard instruments: a Winkwelmann Piano.

Donated by Stewart Bogle, from Darlington, this rare, curved upright was made in the early 1900s by the German manufacturer Winkwelmann & Co. The curved keyboard reduces the distance between the player and the upper and lower registers of the instrument, thus facilitating playing at each end of the compass.

The instrument was purchased at Rippon Bros. in Perth for the donor’s great aunt. The newly acquired instrument plays well and has a beautiful sound. To make an appointment to view the Winkelmann piano, as well as other instruments in the Eileen Joyce Collection, please email us.
