Premier Barnett went on his first overseas trip to Japan, in relation to science and technology in Hyogo Prefecture, which has a sister state relationship with WA.

The Premier's delegation visited the Kobe Port Island Authority's Biomedical Cluster, the national research institute RIKEN's Centre for Developmental Biology and Kobe University. Kobe University is involved in a Trilateral Collaboration with UWA and Zheijiang University, which has Bioengineering and Biotherapeutics as two of its main focuses.

Professor David Sampson and Professor Giles Plant were on hand during these meetings to brief the Premier and to engage in discussions with the various Japanese delegations.
