The inaugural Monadelphous Integrated Learning Centre student industry project was a success. Three excellent students in Mechanical Engineering did a 12 week project with Monadelphous related to the efficiency of structural connectors. Engineers at Monadelphous working with academic staff, provided supervision. The students were flown to Newman to observe a construction site first-hand. The project was considered very successful and two of the students continued to do further vacation work with Monadelphous. Further projects are on the drawing board for 2009 with Monadelphous and Lycopodium Minerals.

In November UWA was delighted to host a visit from Professor Anette Kolmos. Professor Kolomos is the UNESCO Chair in Problem Based Learning in Engineering Education. She shared her experience of 30 years of successful application of Problem Based Learning (PBL) at Aalborg University and ran an inspiring workshop for participants from across the UWA campus. The Vice Chancellor conferred the honour of recognising Professor Kolmos as a Distinguished Visiting Teacher. The workshop, the first Monadelphous Integrated Learning Centre event, was hosted by the Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics in collaboration with the Centre for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning. Participants explored concepts of PBL, curriculum change, challenges faced when introducing PBL plus working models from campuses around the globe.
