Concerns that children are being sexualised in popular culture and art will be the subject of a free public lecture by commentator and author Professor Catharine Lumby at The University of Western Australia soon.

Professor Lumby is Director of the Journalism and Media Research Centre at the University of New South Wales and co-author of the recently released book The Porn Report ( Melbourne University Publishing, 2008).

Her lecture, "Picturing Innocence: Children and Representation", will explore current debates about the sexualisation of children. Professor Lumby will analyse the images that have generated controversy and will put them into a cultural historical context. She will ask what is at stake in representations of children and what these debates tell us about how we understand and frame childhood in the 21st century.

Professor Lumby has worked as a news reporter, feature writer and columnist for the Sydney Morning Herald and the Bulletin magazine. She sits on the Education and Welfare Committee and the Research Committee of the National Rugby League, advising on gender issues. She is also a member of the Advertising Standards Board.
