University graduates can play a significant role in encouraging young Australians to fulfil their potential through education, according to Mr Simon Dawkins, Warden of Convocation at The University of Western Australia.

"The pressures on our society are currently very significant, and at times like this we all need to maintain a focus on the benefits of education at all levels and not become overly consumed by economic gloom and doom," he said.

Mr Dawkins said graduates who have benefited from their university experience could become the champions of education either individually or through participation in their alumni, graduate associations or convocation.

He said the First Ordinary Meeting of Convocation, the UWA Graduates Association, to be held in March, had an open invitation to all graduates and other members of Convocation to attend. It will be held on Friday, March 20, 2009 at 6.30pm for a 7pm start in the University Club, Hackett Drive Crawley.

"The meeting is an opportunity to hear reports from UWA leaders on the key activities of the University within the community, nationally and internationally. These include reports from Vice-Chancellor, Professor Alan Robson, UWA Student Guild President, Mr Dom Rose, and guest speaker Professor Jane Davidson, Callaway/Tunley Chair of Music who will speak on music for health and well-being accompanied by the Choir of The People Who Care."

Mr Dawkins said those wishing to attend could assist arrangements for hospitality which will follow the meeting by sending an RSVP on (08) 6488 3006 or via email to [email protected]
