The Faculty is delighted to announce that Associate Professor Lucho (Luchezar) Stoyanov has been awarded the B. H. Neumann award by the Australian Mathematics Trust for sustained service to the enrichment of mathematics learning in Australia.

Only three BH Neumann Awards are presented annually for important contributions over many years to the enrichment of mathematics learning in Australia and its region. Associate Professor Sotyanov was commended on his crucial role in establishing the UWA Academy for Young Mathematicians and continuing as its champion.

The Academy is the single most important outreach initiative to high school mathematics students that the UWA School of Mathematics and Statistics has undertaken since the WA Mathematics Summer School which ran in the time of Professor Larry Blakers (also a BH Neumann Award winner). The Academy is an enrichment programme in Mathematics for high school students who are currently in Years 10 and 11. As well as Associate Professor Stoyanov's own contributions, he harnesses the efforts of others to make this wonderful initiative a success.

In 2009 two of the three BH Neumann awards were presented to West Australians.  The second award was presented to Associate Professor Stoyanov's wife Dr Elena Stoyanov - only the second time in the 17 years of these awards that a husband and wife have both been honoured.

B.H. (Bernhard) Neumann was an honorary doctorand of UWA.
