A major paper co-authored by child health expert and former Australian of the Year, Professor Fiona Stanley, recommending urgent action in preventive health and urging the establishment of a dedicated "wellness" unit in WA has been released for public discussion.

The University of Western Australia's release of "Putting Health First - A Discussion Paper" is the outcome of a forum organised by the Institute of Advanced Studies in August 2008.

Its other authors are:

  • Director of the Health Consumers' Council, Michele Kosky;
  • Director of UWA's Centre for the Built Environment and Health, Professor Billie Giles-Corti;
  • Director of UWA's Centre for Aboriginal Health and Dental Care, Associate Professor Helen Milroy;
  • and Head of School of Nursing, Midwifery and Postgraduate Medicine and Chair on Mental Health Nursing at Edith Cowan University, Professor Cobie Rudd.

The report makes nine key recommendations for a greater emphasis on prevention along with better management of illness and has been sent to the State and Federal Health Ministers as well as key industry and consumer groups.

Copies of the discussion paper are available from UWA's Institute of Advanced Studies on: 6488 1340, or email: [email protected]
