The University conferred its first degrees in May 1917 at a ceremony held at Government House. Some 2,750 degrees, including eight Honorary Doctorates, were conferred during the 2008 Autumn Graduation ceremonies, heralded by the magnificently restored McGillivray Organ in Winthrop Hall. In all, around 100,000 degrees have been conferred since that first graduation ceremony.

Dr James R H Ross, BSc (Hons) W.Aust.1963, PhD Calif. Berkeley was awarded the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Science on Thursday, 10 April 2008. James co-founded the Geology Club (now the Woolnough Society) in 1960 and served as its President in 1961. He has since worked tirelessly for the School of Earth and Geological Sciences and is the current Chair of the UWA Geoscience Foundation and the Centre for Exploration Targeting.
