The University of Western Australia was honoured to be selected for the 2008 Commonwealth Day Lecture. The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education), Professor Donald Markwell, in conjunction with Professor Geoffrey Bolton AO and the Commonwealth Round Table in Australia hosted the event.

Over 140 people attended the Lecture on Monday 10 March held in the Auditorium of the University Club. The Hon Justice Nicholas Hasluck AM, Chair of the Commonwealth Writer's Prize Advisory Committee, spoke on Thought Crimes and other Themes in Commonwealth Literature.

Following what proved to be a most interesting presentation, attendees were invited to enjoy drinks in the auditorium foyer. A small group of VIPs including the Governor, His Excellency Dr Ken Michael AC and Mrs Julie Michael, then attended a dinner hosted by the Vice-Chancellor Professor Alan Robson AM.
